A Wildflower Field in Transylvania, Reworked as Couture

Mihaela Ionescu grew up in the Carpathian foothills, close enough to the poppy fields that their motifs ended up in her sketchbooks before she ever formalized them into a collection.

Mihaela is the founder and designer behind Freya Art Atelier, based in Brașov, and the newest name joining Ce Fain!. She trained formally in tailoring, fashion arts, and photography, but the real education came later and mostly alone: years spent studying the motifs stitched into old Romanian costumes, learning what each flower and line meant before she let herself reinterpret them.

That reinterpretation is the whole point of her work. Freya Art Atelier does not reproduce traditional Romanian dress. It takes the vocabulary, the floral symbolism, the silhouettes worn by generations of women in Transylvania, and rebuilds it for a wardrobe someone might actually reach for on a Tuesday. Digital embroidery instead of hand stitching where it makes sense. Sheer sleeves instead of heavy wool. The past, worn loosely.

Flower Dance

Her debut collection with us, Flower Dance, takes its cue from wildflowers that grow without permission. Five pieces, each built around a specific bloom and a specific memory of the Romanian countryside.

The Poppy Field Forever dress, in black or ivory, reworks folk embroidery into a fluid crepe satin silhouette with a detachable waist belt, poppies climbing the sleeves. Worn one way, it is an evening dress. Belt removed, it becomes something quieter. The ivory version has already caught the eye of brides looking for something other than the expected.

Folk Song takes its shape from the woven belts of traditional Romanian dress, sheer embroidered sleeves and lace doing the talking. Wild Flowers, a linen blouse meant for everyday wear, carries colorful floral embroidery the way a meadow carries color, without trying too hard. And Black and White Rose borrows its dramatic, voluminous sleeves from the traditional ie, gathered with long tassel ties, roses embroidered in restraint.

None of it reads as costume. That was Mihaela's line to walk, and she walks it carefully.

Why she is here

Mihaela's national costume designs have represented Romania at competitions in Dubai, Egypt, and Poland. Cătălin Botezatu handed her the Best National Costume award at Kids Top Model 2023, a recognition she has said means more to her than most. Her work has moved through theatre productions and film sets, always the same thread: heritage rebuilt for the present, never frozen in it.

That is the same thread running through everything we look for at Ce Fain!. Romania has designers doing work this considered, this specific, and most of them have never had a reason to think an American audience would care. We think they are wrong about that, and Mihaela is one of the clearest arguments why.
