In a world driven by fast fashion and fleeting trends, Iraida Florea has chosen another path — one rooted in ancestral memory, sacred gesture, and the quiet force of symbolism. Through her project Hyperborean Folklore, Iraida doesn’t simply design garments. She builds temples. Alters. Portals.
Each creation is an offering — not to the market, but to the past, to the unseen, and to the future.
Born into a world where visual language spoke louder than words, Iraida’s creative life began long before she ever defined herself as an artist. As a child, she appeared in visual campaigns, intuitively drawn to the intersection of image and identity. She went on to study international negotiation and economics, a path that would eventually give way to something older and more urgent: a calling to reawaken the sacred language of Romanian folklore.
In 2016, Hyperborean Folklore was born — not as a brand in the traditional sense, but as a living archive. A ritual space. A platform for translating Romania’s ancient symbols, textiles, and forms into contemporary expressions of beauty and power. Iraida refers to her garments as “sacred spaces.” Worn on the body, they become instruments of remembrance.
From the structure of the folk blouse to the embroidery logics of forgotten villages, she traces and transforms these codes. Yet nothing is replicated. Everything is reimagined — layered with personal mythology, abstract symbolism, and the refined sensibility of an artist working across disciplines. Garments become sculpture. Jewelry becomes talisman. Photographs become ceremonial maps.
Her limited-edition collections — including the self-published Ethnic Fashion Encyclopedias — blend text, costume, photography, and bilingual narrative. They are not seasonal but eternal, positioned outside the rhythm of fashion and within the rhythm of ritual. Many of her works have been exhibited in cultural spaces across Germany and Romania, including performances, installations, and experimental stagings that dissolve the line between clothing and ceremony.
Iraida’s practice moves seamlessly across costume design, fine art, and symbolic curation. And yet, at its core, it remains deeply human. Every piece is created with intention. Every collection is shaped by silence, study, and spiritual observation. The work invites the wearer not only to adorn themselves — but to remember themselves. To ask: What does it mean to wear your heritage? What does it mean to hold a myth against your skin?
