Once prepared, the sponge is carefully integrated into the hand-shaped ring, where it begins to define the inner architecture of the piece. During the first firing at 2282°F (1250°C), the natural sponge burns away completely, leaving no physical trace behind. However, its organic structure is permanently preserved in the porcelain that has set around it, capturing the exact negative space and intricate porous geometry it once occupied.
