In 1976, in Montreal, the scoreboard broke.
A fourteen-year-old Romanian girl walked to the uneven bars and did her routine.
The judges gave her the highest score the sport allows.
The scoreboard could not show it. It had been built by people who believed a perfect ten was impossible, so it stopped at 9.99. It flashed 1.00 instead. For a moment, nobody in the arena knew what they were looking at.
Then they understood.
Nadia Comăneci had just scored the first perfect ten in the history of gymnastics.
She was fourteen years old. That week she scored six more. Seven perfect tens in all, three gold medals, and the all-around title, the first a Romanian had ever won.
She has lived in America since 1989.
